What Is Hypnosis & How Does It Work?

When most people hear the word ‘hypnosis’ they usually think of a swinging pocket watch, getting up on stage and barking like a dog or acting like someone else and making an idiot of themselves.  Since the 1970s the popularity of the on-stage hypnotist has gained in popularity.  The things that you see and the things that people do on stage are funny!  However, it has tainted the reality of what hypnosis is, for most people, and the benefits that can be received from it.  So many people reject the idea as soon as they hear the word.  I now use the term ‘relaxation’ and then add in beneficial hypnotic suggestions and information.  Ironically, people willingly and easily relax when you use the word ‘relaxation’ as opposed to ‘hypnosis.

Hypnosis is nothing to be scared of.  What many people do not realise is that, at no point will you take on any suggestion that is not morally or ethically consistent with your beliefs or behaviours. No one can make you do anything that will harm yourself or others e.g. make you commit a crime, make you walk across a busy street or quack like a duck in a packed shopping mall.  All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis with the facilitation by a health professional.  At all times, you have a part of your conscious/unconscious called the ‘Hidden Observer’ that vigilantly monitors all information in and out, to ensure that you are protected.  The ‘Hidden Observer’ vigilantly seeks out positive, beneficial information, to absorb and change, that will enhance your potential and rejects any negative.  At all times, you are in control!

Hypnosis is not a sleeping state.  It is an enhanced state of concentration and focus that bypasses the conscious in favour of the unconscious.  Hypnosis helps you to tune out all of the stimuli that bombards you constantly, internally and externally, to give you a laser like focus.  Through relaxing your mind and body, you allow your brain waves to reduce to the optimal level for learning, change and creativity.  At this point you can speed up psychological and physiological reprogramming and override unhealthy programming. There is a word of caution:  under hypnosis, you will only change the programming you want to change.  If you do not want to change your programming or are not ready to let go and make changes then reprogramming will not take place.  For example, if you don’t want to give up smoking and you try hypnosis, then the suggestions will not work.  You are wasting your time and money!  Suggestions need to be accepted before change can occur.

    • As an infant you quickly learned that food = comfort – every time you felt discomfort or hunger you cried and your mother responded by feeding you.  When you were teething, you were soothed by your parents giving you something to chew on – further reinforcing the belief.  So as you entered into adolescence you found that discomfort came from many other emotional sources such as anger, sadness, anxiety, depression, stress, boredom and you again paired food with decreasing the discomfort of these emotions – ‘I need/must eat’
    • Dieting – repeatedly trying dieting without success may develop thoughts, emotions and beliefs of, ‘I am hopeless/a failure’, ‘I have no willpower’, ‘I have no self control’.  This same belief system can be generalized to other areas of life too.
    • It is like a computer – the brain is the hardware and all of the beliefs, emotions, thoughts, habits are the software or programming that drives the computer.  In many cases, we have unhealthy programming and the good thing is that, just as it was developed through repetition, it can be altered through repetition.  Change the programming and change the output.  Eg. If you have unhealthy programming then your output/outcome/behaviours etc will be unhealthy.  How did you learn your times tables at school or how to drive a car?  Through repetition and experience.  Therefore, you can also learn new behaviours, thoughts, beliefs etc.  If you have unhealthy programming, you need to override the programming with new programming and this will only be successful if you are consistent and repetitive.  Programming can be sped up through the use of hypnosis as it goes straight to your unconscious.
